American FET is a 500-series style FET compressor plug-in for Windows, available in VST3 and AAX formats. It models a discrete JFET gain stage, op-amps, and an output transformer, offering four modes: C (2:1 compression), L (20:1 limiting), OFF (transformer and amplifier coloration without compression), and BYP (true bypass). A single control sets the compression threshold while automatically compensating for the output level, and there are four release time settings ranging from 0.1 to 2.5 seconds.
A D-S side-chain filter biases the detector toward the high-frequency range—useful for taming harshness—while also preserving deep bass. The plug-in includes external side-chain support, stereo-link and mono modes, a dry/wet mix for parallel processing, and a detector that reconstructs peaks at approximately 380kHz to ensure accurate transient capture. In “OFF” mode, the output control functions as a “drive” control, allowing for the addition of transformer saturation. This plug-in is well-suited for producers working in DAWs like FL Studio, Ableton, or Logic who want to add “snap” to drums, control vocals, or impart a console-like weight to tracks that do not necessarily require compression.
